When Do I Need Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a cap that is used to cover discolored, cracked, broken, or filled teeth. Dental crowns add stability to the tooth and prevent further damage. They are also used to attach dental bridges to fill in gaps where you are missing teeth.
When you have worn-down teeth, large fillings, or fractured teeth, our dentist might recommend dental crowns to help protect your teeth from further deterioration. Dental crowns can be matched to the shape and color of your existing teeth and look completely natural. Contact our dental offices today to find out if you may need dental crowns.

Dental Crowns vs. Veneers
A dental crown covers all parts of a tooth that are exposed above the gum line to restore its strength and functionality. A veneer only covers the front part of the tooth for cosmetic purposes. If you have a tooth that has experienced significant damage or loss of structure, then a dental crown would be the preferred method of restoring the tooth and preventing further damage.
When Do I Need a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a structure used to span the gap where you are missing a tooth and replace the tooth. Two dental crowns function as anchors on either side of the gap to hold the bridge in place over the gap. A replacement tooth is fused between the crowns, creating a bridge between the existing teeth. Dental bridges can also be used to replace more than one missing tooth if you have a larger gap.
Dental bridges not only replace your missing teeth for cosmetic purposes but also prevent the shifting of your teeth. When you lose a tooth or have one extracted, your other teeth can move around in your mouth over time due to the space left by the missing tooth. A dental bridge fills in this space so the rest of your teeth stay right where they are supposed to.
How Are Dental Crowns and Bridges Installed?
In order to cap a tooth with a dental crown, our dentist will first shape the existing tooth to fit inside the new covering. This can mean either removing some of the existing material or building it up with filling, depending on the state of the tooth and how much of its original structure is still there.
After your tooth has been shaped, we will take impressions of your teeth to build the new dental crown. The impressions will be used to create a model of your teeth so we can design a dental crown that both looks great when you smile and functions well when you bite. Our skilled dentist will match the crown to the rest of your healthy teeth to give you a natural, beautiful smile.
The process of creating a dental bridge starts with preparing the teeth on either side of your gap for dental crowns. We will then create a crown for each of those teeth, with at least one additional crown fused between them to replace your missing tooth or teeth. Once the bridge is created, we install it over the prepared teeth to fill in the gap and restore your smile.
